About Copper Phoenix Art Sculpture

The focus of this page is three-dimensional copper sculpture. Everything I create by hand using some very old tech-equipment and techniques. The pieces are brought to life by employing Chasing and Repousse -- which is also akin to metal embossing. Essentially it is creating 3D sculptures from flat sheet metal, and is composed of lengthy hammering process that achieves effects like low to high relief sculpture, or, leads to fully three-dimensional sculpture artworks. Often larger pieces have inner yet unseen frames that give the metal more strength. The Statue of Liberty was created using a similar system. I do things in a much, much smaller scale, while using foundational processes coupled with some of my own; and always, as a matter of course, be it large or small, subtly detailed or intensively detailed, strive to make each piece as beautiful and lasting as possible.

I seal each sculpture with an enamel clear coat finish. This protects the copper and keeps it from oxidizing and developing a patina over lengths of time. The same is true for wall hanging sculpture. With fountains on the other hand, the water becomes a catalyst and as it removes the finish, a beautiful patina evolves primarily where the water resides and flows. A concept suited for copper that I am working on expanding is combining the sculpture into fountain's but with the sculpture more isolated so the sealed copper can retain it's original luster and colors while the water fountain evolves a patina - both blending the worlds of form and function for unique looks and contrasts. Great examples are the Phoenix Bird Waterfall and the Fairy Fountain, but much more can be done in this mode too. (The option is also available to have sculptures left unsealed so they will naturally oxidize on their own too.
